Lomas Continues Strong Play

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Ricky’s All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes, have announced Petes’ veteran forward Mike Lomas as the Ricky’s All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending March 1st, 2010. For his accomplishments, Mike receives a gift certificate from Ricky’s All Day Grill.

Lomas, a native of Burlington, ON, was acquired in a trade early in the season by the maroon and white from the Owen Sound Attack. His play of late has brought him more playing time with the injuries to key players. Now sitting with thirty-eight points on the campaign, Mike notched six points including three goals and three assists which moved him into fifth place on the Petes leading scorers. Since coming over to the Petes, Lomas has thrived in his role as a top six forward that came due to his improved play with added ice time.

Petes Skid Reaches Nine

PETERBOROUGH, ON – The Peterborough Petes have officially gotten into a slump. Losers of eight straight heading into action against the Owen Sound Attack tonight, the Petes were unable to hold an early lead as they dropped their ninth in a row by a 7-4 final.

The first period was all maroon and white as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before giving up a late goal to head into the intermission up 3-1. Matt Puempel got the Petes on the board when he snuck a shot through Attack goaltender Scott Stacjer’s pads after receiving a long stretch feed from overage forward Pat Daley. Mike Lomas would score his first goal of the game before Austin Watson notched his second in as many games since returning to the lineup last night.

The Attack dominated the rest of the game as the Petes were only able to solve Jordan Binnington, who replaced Stacjer after the third goal, once on Lomas’ second of the game half way through the third period which was enough to earn him second star honours.

Rookie goaltender Andrew D’Agostini was solid in goal despite allowing six goals as he was left to fend for himself on several occasions due to defensive miscues. Austin Watson picked up the Hardest Working Pete of the Game as he had one goal to go along with his strong defensive play which saw him block several shots on Owen Sound’s eight man advantages.

Next action for the Petes is Thursday night when they play host to the Ottawa 67’s in their final meeting of the campaign. Game time for Thursday’s game is 7:00 PM.

Watson Returns, Skid Continues

This isn't the case for the Peterborough Petes. They have stopped pointing the finger, and instead are accepting the blame. In what was marked as the return of Austin Watson, the maroon and white could not quite take advantage of little mistakes by the Guelph Storm, as they saw their losing skid stretch to eight games at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph tonight.

The first period was dominated by the Petes, although the Storm escaped with a 2-0 lead. Scoring twice on just six shots in the period, the Storm put the maroon and white in a hole they couldn't dig out of.

Outscoring the Petes 3-2 in the second period, Guelph looked to have the game wrapped up. However, a strong comeback helped get the Petes to within one goal before being unable to solve Brandon Foote for the tie in the dying minutes.

Scorers for the Petes included Jamie Wise who notched his third, Jamie Doornbosch with his eleventh, Brett Theberge with his fifteenth and sixteenth, and Matt Puempel with his twenty-seventh.

Next action for the Petes is tomorrow night when they finish off the weekend at the Harry Lumley Arena in Owen Sound at 7:30 PM.

Surging Dogs Squash Petes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Niagara Ice Dogs are getting hot at the right time. With just two weeks left in the season, the Ice Dogs have it a hot streak at the same time the Petes have gone cold. Receiving points in just three of their last ten games, the Petes will look to snap that skid when they hopefully receive Austin Watson back to the lineup before taking on the Guelph Storm tonight.

Last night was all Dogs from start to finish. Leading 3-1 after the first, 3-1 after the second, and adding two more in the third, the Petes couldn't muster much of anything, falling 5-1.

With the possible addition of Watson to their lineup, the Petes will look to snap their seven game losing skid and get a much needed two points against the Storm at the Sleeman Centre tonight at 7:00 PM.

Ennismore Native Wins Again

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Ricky’s All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes, have announced Petes’ sophomore defenseman Jeff Braithwaite as the Ricky’s All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending February 22nd, 2010. For his accomplishments, Jeff receives a gift certificate from Ricky’s All Day Grill.

Braithwaite, a native of Ennismore, ON, has continued to be a defensive rock on the blue line for the maroon and white. This past weekend Jeff added three points to go along with his strong defensive play in three games for the Petes. His goal output has reached a career high with three goals and he sits just three points away from his career high seventeen points. Born and raised in the Peterborough area, Braithwaite has grown up as a fan of the Petes his entire life and continues to live the dream of every Peterborough native by playing for the maroon and white.

Petes Hang Tough, Drop Afternoon Decision

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes earned just one point in their two games this weekend. Taking on the second ranked teams in either conference, the London Knights and Ottawa 67's, the Petes managed to force the Knights to a shootout before falling victim to a very talented London squad before traveling to the Nation's Capital this afternoon and dropping a 5-2 decision.

In last night's meeting with London, Mike Lomas, Brett Theberge, Jack Walchessen, Justin Larson, and Lomas' second of the night was enough to force the extra frame against the Knights. Rookie goaltender Andrew D'Agostini played well in between the pipes despite allowing five goals in regulation. It took the Knights six rounds in the shootout to finally put the Petes away in what was the best full effort by the maroon and white this season.

Today the Petes ran out of gas. Playing in the second of back-to-back games, Matt Puempel and Liam Heelis tallied for the maroon and white and Jason Missiaen was steady in goal.

Next action for the Petes is Thursday night when they take on the Niagara Ice Dogs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre before heading off to Guelph and Owen Sound to close out their Western Conference play for the 2009-10 season.

Petes Drop 6-4 Decision to 67's

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes showed great heart and no quit tonight at the Peterborough Memorial Centre however, the effort was not enough as they dropped a 6-4 final to the visiting Ottawa 67's. Both teams have been hit hard by the injury bug as of late as the Petes have been without Ryan Spooner and Austin Watson, and the 67's came into town walking wounded, missing Tyler Cuma, Ryan Martindale, and Tyler Graovac.

The 67's dominated the first period after handling an early maroon and white onslaught. Tallying twice in just over six minutes to enter the first intermission with the 2-0 lead.

Scoring was not hard to come by in the second frame for either team as Matt Puempel drew the Petes to within one before the 67's responded with two more to increase the lead once again. Brett Theberge and Puempel rounded out the scoring for the second period as Ottawa remained with the lead after forty minutes of play, 4-3.

Despite a valiant effort in the third period, the maroon and white were unable to capitalize on their late chances as Cody Lindsay scored his first of two in the frame to increase the lead to 5-3 before Liam Heelis capitalized late on a power play to bring the maroon and white back within one. However, it was all for not on this night as Lindsay scored into the empty net to seal the victory for the Ottawa 67's.

Next action for the Petes is Saturday night when they play host to the London Knights before a rematch with the Ottawa 67's Sunday in the Nation's Capital.

Stars Sweep Stouffville

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Jr. A Stars completed a first round sweep last night as they beat Stouffville 5-2. Leading the way in round one was Steve Evans, acquired earlier in the year from Kingston, who notched six goals and three assists in just four games.

The Stars will now wait for the three other series to finish before beginning round two.

Petes Fall, Donate to Good Cause

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Pink was definitely in the rink last night as the Peterborough Petes played their special "Pink in the Rink" game against the Barrie Colts to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Research.

Although the Petes came out on the losing end of a lopsided 7-2 score, the night was about more than that. It was about creating Breast Cancer Awareness while celebrating the survivors and remembering those who have been touched by the disease.

The Peterborough Petes organization, with the help of the community, raised $51,614. The big ticket items, the pink jerseys, received the top money total, raising $13,200. Here is the list of the jerseys and what they went for.

Puempel Wins Trifecta

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Ricky’s All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes, have announced Petes’ rookie forward Matt Puempel as the Ricky’s All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending February 8th , 2010. For his accomplishments, Matt receives a gift certificate for Ricky’s All Day Grill.

Puempel, a native of Essex, ON, was named the Ontario Hockey League’s Rookie of the Month for the month of January as well as receiving the Academic Achievement award. His strong play this week proved the Ontario Hockey League’s decision as being correct. In just two games, Matt added five points to remain atop the league lead for Rookie Scoring. Puempel currently sits with twenty-two goals and seventeen assists for a one point lead on Oshawa Generals’ rookie Boone Jenner. He sits fourth on the maroon and white just one point behind veteran defenceman Jamie Doornbosch who has played in nine more games.

Stars Win, Clinch 5th

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Jr. A Stars have finished in 5th place in the Central Canadian Hockey League with a victory over the rival Lindsay Muskies tonight, 4-3. Troy Barss scored the winning goal on the power play and Zac Fryia played another strong game in net as he continues his strong season.

The Stars will now play the Stouffville Spirit in round one of the playoffs. Stouffville will have the home-ice advantage.

Petes Split Weekend Games

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes recovered nicely from a 5-4 home loss to the Kingston Frontenacs when they beat the rival Oshawa Generals 6-3 last night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Thursday night's game saw the Petes come out of the gate flying but they were unable to beat Frontenacs' goalie Tyler Beskorowany for the early lead. Four straight goals by the Frontenacs, including a short-handed marker, gave Kingston enough of a lead that they would hang on despite the maroon and white pulling within one goal twice.

Last night's game started much the same as Thursday's as the Petes came out with a lot of energy. However this time they would solve Oshawa goaltender Michael Zador twice for the early 2-0 lead which they would never let go of as they hung on for the 6-3 win.

Matt Puempel and Justin Larson led the offense as they both notched five points in just the two games. Jason Missiaen was in goal for both games.

Next action for the Petes is Thursday night when they play host to the Barrie Colts, 7:00 PM at the Memorial Centre. Thursday is the much anticipated "Pink in the Rink" night. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Lomas Rewarded for Strong Play

Petes Show No Quit

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Just when all the fans counted them out, the Peterborough Petes kicked their game into another gear as they overcame another big injury and beat the visiting Ottawa 67's 3-1. Overage forward Pat Daley fell victim to the injury bug as he missed tonight's game with an undisclosed injury.

The Petes controlled the play in the first period scoring two goals on just eight shots. Matt Puempel showed his hand-eye coordination when he tipped in a shot from Adrian Robertson for the opening tally of the game. Overage forward Brett Theberge scored on a deflection of his own to close out the first period as he tipped in a bad angle shot by Mike Lomas for the 2-0 lead.

Both teams exchanged chances in the second period but neither team was able to beat the opposing goaltenders.

The third period was all 67's for the most part as they broke Jason Missiaen's shutout on a Corey Cowick power play goal. However, a four minute head butting penalty by Cody Lindsay sealed the deal for the Petes as the "Buckhorn Bandit" Justin Larson scored into the empty net for the 3-1 final.

The Petes will now have a well deserved Sunday off before they get back to work this week for their next game Thursday night, 7:00 PM at the Peterborough Memorial Centre against the Kingston Frontenacs.

Fronts Run Over Petes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes were unable to capitalize on their chances tonight at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston as they fell 4-1 to the host Kingston Frontenacs. The Petes have now dropped all five games since suffering major injuries to Ryan Spooner, Austin Watson, and Jack Walchessen.

The Frontenacs held the lead from start to finish, scoring the first four goals of the game before the Petes' Joey West slid a wrap around past Kingston goaltender Tyler Beskorowany to break his shutout.

Next action for the Petes is tomorrow night when they cap off the third of their three games in three nights at home against the Ottawa 67's, 7:00 PM at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Petes Drop Fourth Straight

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes have officially hit hard times. Still attempting to replace the scoring touch lost due to recent injuries, the Petes could not capitalize on several good scoring chances despite some great puck control and strong effort by the remaining players. The Petes have no dropped four straight as they dropped tonight's game to the Belleville Bulls 3-1.

The Bulls scored the lone goal of the first period when Andy Bathgate capped off a perfect tic-tac-toe passing play and slid the puck past Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen for the 1-0 lead after one period.

The second period looked much like the first as the Bulls again scored the lone goal of the frame. This time it was Kyle DeCoste putting a wrist shot past Missiaen on a 3-on-1 break.

The maroon and white trimmed the lead to one as overage forward Brett Theberge slid the puck out front of the net and veteran Mike Lomas chipped it home. However it was not meant to be tonight as the Bulls' Richard Panik snapped a shot over Missiaen's shoulder for the 3-1 final despite late pressure by the Petes.

Petes Pump Up The Jam

Puempel, a native of Essex, ON, continues to climb up the scoring charts for both the Ontario Hockey League and the Petes in his rookie season. Drafted in the first round by the maroon and white, Matt had a lot of eyes on him entering this season as all of the fans expected big things from him. His play has not disappointed. In three games this past weekend, Puempel scored one goal and two assists after the Petes lost Ryan Spooner, Austin Watson, and Jack Walchessen all to severe injuries. Matt currently sits with a combined thirty-five points which leaves him fourth on the team just three points behind veteran defenceman Jamie Doornbosch who sits with a total of thirty-eight points.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes seem to be the underdog in every game they play this year. Especially now that they have lost two of their top forwards due to injury in the past two games.

This afternoon they were unable to overcome the odds and suffered a tough defeat, 8-2 to the London Knights at the John Labatt's Centre in London. Scoring for the Petes were Pat Daley, who notched his 21st of the season, and rookie Matt Puempel who notched his 20th of the season.

Petes Fall Despite Effort

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Despite a valiant effort by the maroon and white tonight, the Peterborough Petes fell to the host Plymouth Whalers 4-2.

The Petes would start off strong taking a 2-1 lead to the dressing room on goals by Jamie Doornbosch and the Buckhorn Bandit Justin Larson. However three unanswered goals, including one into the empty net, was enough to sink the Petes against a strong Whalers squad.

Petes Suffer Tough Loss

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes lost more than just a game tonight at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, they lost three players as well. Leading scorer Ryan Spooner, newly acquired Austin Watson, and assistant captain Jack Walchessen were all at the hospital receiving x-rays on their injuries.

After falling behind 1-0, the Petes marched back to score three unanswered goals for the 3-1 lead in the second period. However the maroon and white could not hang on as the visiting Owen Sound Attack scored three unanswered goals of their own to take the game 4-3.

The bigger story was the injuries though. Spooner left midway through the first period with what appeared to be a broken collarbone, Watson participated in the per-game warm-up but could not take part in the actual game after blocking a shot in last night's CHL Top Prospect's Game, and a Walchessen left just after Spooner with a separated shoulder.

The Petes next action comes Saturday night when they visit the Plymouth Whalers.

Buckhorn Bandit Strikes Back

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Ricky’s All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes, have announced Petes’ veteran forward and the Buckhorn Bandit, Justin Larson as the Ricky’s All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending January 18, 2010. For his accomplishments, Justin receives a gift certificate for Ricky’s All Day Grill.

Larson, a Buckhorn, ON native, scored five points including three goals to go along with his two assists to lead the maroon and white in scoring over their three game weekend. His five points on the weekend saw him shoot up the scoring charts for the Petes as he now sits with nine goals and fourteen assists, leaving him just nine points behind rookie Matt Puempel for fifth place. His success comes on the heels of being moved up to the third line alongside Jack Walchessen and Mike Lomas. Justin has also seen his time on the Petes second power play unit increase with the departure of Zack Kassian via trade.

Petes Show Heart, Win Big

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes looked to be out of gas heading into the third period tonight against the visiting Kingston Frontenacs. That was until two quick goals by rookie sensation Matt Puempel gave them a new energy in front of 3,344 fans at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, propelling them to a big 7-4 victory against their division rivals.

The first period was dominated in large part by the maroon and white. Out-shooting the Frontenacs 13-8 and goals by Liam Heelis and Justin Larson gave the Petes a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Frontenacs battled in the third period, out-shooting the Petes 17-8 but only managing to come away with a tie after two periods. Frontenacs forward Joe Pleckaitis scored his first of two on the night for the lone goal of the period.

Both teams exploded with offense in the third period. Puempel notched a pair just 2:20 apart for the quick two goal lead before a weak shot squeaked through Jason Missiaen's pads to cut the lead back to one. The Buckhorn Bandit Justin Larson would strike again just twenty-one seconds later as he stole the puck at the Frontenacs blue line and snapped a shot top shelf to restore the two goal lead. Once again the Frontenacs battled back with a quick response to cut the lead to one before goals by Jack Walchessen and Puempel's first Ontario Hockey League Hat-trick put the game away for the maroon and white.

Team Effort Powers Petes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes need a shootout for the second time in the Nation's Capital as they put in a solid team effort to beat the host 67's by a 4-3 margin.

The maroon and white got the lone goal of the first period as Liam Heelis showed his agility, getting past two defenders to slide the puck into the open net for the 1-0 lead.

Both teams managed to find the back of the net in the second frame as Thomas Nesbitt and Tyler Cuma drew the 67's back even on two separate occasions. The first came just 4:54 into the period when Nesbitt took a pass from behind the net and put it just under the crossbar for the 1-1 tie.

Chris Breen would give the Petes the 2-1 lead just 1:23 later before Cuma drew the 67's back even for the 2-2 tie after the second period.

The Buckhorn Bandit Justin Larson showed his dangling skills as hey came out from the corner and past Tyler Cuma to slide the puck past Chris Perugini. With just two seconds left and the goaltender on the bench, Corey Cowick banged home a loose puck to force the game to overtime tied at 3-3.

Ryan Spooner scored the lone goal of the shootout and Jason Missiaen stopped all three shots he faced as the Petes held on for the two points.

Watson Debuts, Petes Win Big

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes began the post-deadline era with a statement last night as they defeated the visiting Belleville Bulls 5-1 in front of 2,700 fans at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Both teams exchanged chances in the first period but were unable to beat the respective goaltenders for an early lead.

The Bulls came out of the gate flying to start the second frame as Andy Bathgate put a shot off the post and then off Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen for the one nothing lead. However the Petes would take over from there scoring five unanswered goals for the 5-1 final.

Overage forward Pat Daley got the Petes on the board midway through the second period as he finished off a nice passing play with Ryan Spooner to draw the two clubs even. With under a minute left in the frame, Ortly Beach native Jack Walchessen buried a loose puck past Tyson Teichmann for the 2-1 lead after forty minutes.

In return, the Petes receive sophomore forward Austin Watson, a 2nd round pick in 2012, and a 2nd round pick in 2014.

Watson, a native of Ann Arbor, MI, was a force for the Windsor Spitfires last season scoring twenty-nine points in his rookie season. This season Watson has thirty-four points in forty-two games for the powerhouse Spitfires.

Generals Outlast Petes in Overtime

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes saw their undefeated streak against the Oshawa Generals come to a close tonight as they dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at the General Motors Centre.

The first period saw a total of four goals on just twenty-one shots combined as the Generals held a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes. Scoring for the Petes was overage forward Brett Theberge who capped off a nice setup by captain Zack Kassian.

Both teams traded chances in the second frame but neither team could solve either goaltender.

The Petes put up a valiant effort in the third period as rookie sensation Matt Puempel scored a goal and added an assist on Ryan Spooner's tally that tied the game at 3 apiece.

After receiving a power play in the extra frame the Generals capitalized on a miscue at the blue line that led to the game winning short handed tally by Boone Jenner after a beautiful passing play with Team Canada defenceman Calvin de Haan who was playing in his first game since returning from Saskatoon where he captured a silver medal.

Petes Fall to Strong Majors Squad

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes were in tough last night before the game even started as they hosted the number eight ranked team in all of Canada at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. Although it appeared to be a very mismatched affair before puck drop, the Petes were close on a couple of occasions to tying the game and forcing it into overtime. However, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors showed why they are ranked so high as they capitalized on all of their chances to take the two points by a score of 6-3.

The maroon and white got started on the right foot as veteran forward Jack Walchessen finished off a great play by Justin Larson to get the Petes on the board. Mississauga would reply with two unanswered goals to end the period up 2-1.

The second period saw both teams capitalize once as the Majors maintained their one goal lead after forty minutes. Petes overage forward Pat Daley snapped a shot past the Majors' goaltender to give him nineteen on the season.

The Majors broke open the game in the third period as they added three more, one into the empty net, for the 6-3 final. The Petes third goal was reviewed after a Jamie Doornbosch shot hit the goal post and then bounced just over the goal line for his ninth of the year.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes will be ringing in 2010 in good spirits as they closed out 2009 with a strong 1-0 victory over the visiting Belleville Bulls at the Peterborough Memorial Centre tonight.

The Bulls were looking to avenge their three previous losses on home ice at the hands of the maroon and white by upsetting the Petes at home. However, Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen did not see that in their future as he stopped all thirty-one shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.

The Petes lone goal came midway through the first period when a soft Jamie Wise wrist shot was mishandled by Belleville goaltender Philipp Grubauer and found the back of the net with what ended up being the winning goal.

The three stars were Missiaen, Grubauer, and Wise with captain Zack Kassian being named the Hardest Working Pete.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes will go into the Christmas break on a high note after beating the visiting Ottawa 67's by a 4-2 decision tonight at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The Petes will now have a twelve day lay off before returning to home ice on New Years Eve.

The maroon and white came out looking to avenge the 8-0 loss they suffered at the hands of the same 67's last night in Ottawa. They got off to a nice start as they scored the lone goal of the first period when overage defenceman Chris Breen slid the puck past the Ottawa goaltender for the 1-0 lead.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes could not overcome the odds last night as they fell victim to an 8-0 decision at the hands of the host Ottawa 67's.

Playing with just fifteen skaters and two goalies, the Petes were put at a disadvantage from the very beginning. The 67's led 2-0 after the first period, 4-0 after the second period, then scored four more against the tired maroon and white for the 8-0 decision.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes were connected tonight as the "Internet Line" consisting of Joey West, Jack Walchessen, and Jamie Wise scored two goals and played solid defensive hockey to power the Petes to a 3-1 lead over the visiting Plymouth Whalers.

The game started with an amazing pace as Walchessen capitalized on a nifty pass from line mate Joey West to give the Petes the 1-0 lead. Just fifty-six seconds later, sophomore forward Ryan Spooner let a heavy slap shot go from just inside of the blue line that found the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.

Dogs Take Bite Out of Petes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Niagara Ice Dogs avenged their Thursday night loss to the Peterborough Petes tonight as they came from behind to take a 4-3 decision in St. Catherines.

The Dogs got out to a running start as they scored just 46 seconds into the game to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. However, three straight Peterborough goals gave the Petes the lead after the second period. Matt Puempel scored on the power play 5:38 into the first frame to draw the two teams back even and then goals by Ryan Spooner and Jack Walchessen just two minutes apart in the second period led them to the 3-1 lead.

The Petes could not hang on to their two goal lead in the third period as Niagara's Andrew Shaw and Andrew Agozzino scored twenty-seven seconds apart to get the game back to a 3-3 tie. The Dogs would then capture the 4-3 lead that would eventually be the final as Marco Insam put a blast past Jason Missiaen midway through the final frame.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes extended their winning streak to two games tonight as they beat the Niagara Ice Dogs 3-2 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on "Ricky's All Day Grill Teddy Bear Toss Night".

The bears came soaring out of the stands just 7:38 into the game as Jamie Doornbosch let a heavy slapshot go from the blue line that found the back of the net behind Ice Dogs' goaltender Mark Visentin. The Petes continued their strong play as rookie sensation Matt Puempel notched his fourteenth of the season when he found a loose puck in the slot and slid it past Visentin at the 9:15 mark of the first frame. After the Ice Dogs had cut the lead to one, Ryan Spooner took the puck along the boards and snapped a shot over Visentin's shoulder and into the top corner to restore the two goal lead after one period.

The second frame was very uneventful as neither team could find the back of the net and the score remained 3-1 after two periods of play.

The Ice Dogs scored the only goal of the third period as Freddy Hamilton intercepted a pass shorthanded and put a wrist shot past Jason Missiaen to cut the lead back to just one. Despite a late game push by the Ice Dogs the Petes were able to hang on for the 3-2 victory.

Petes Win Short Handed

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes overcame a short handed disadvantage for the entire game tonight as they went into the Yardmen Arena and Belleville and beat the host Bulls 3-2 in shootout, despite only dressing sixteen players and two goalies.

Though being outplayed in the first period the Bulls managed to come out with a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes of play. Kyle Decoste capitalized on a power play early in the game as the puck was barely kept in at the blue line and Decoste snapped a shot over Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen to open the scoring. That was all of the scoring until the final minute of play when the puck bounced over top of the net and on the stick of Michael Curtis to make the score 2-0.

The Petes continued to dominate the play through the final forty-five minutes as they drew even on two goals in the second frame. The first goal game just seven minutes into the period as Liam Heelis stole the puck at the Petes blue line and went to his back hand to beat the Bulls goaltender short handed. The Petes would then draw even when Jeff Braithwaite slid a point shot past the Belleville goaltender to make it 2-2.

The two teams were deadlocked after the third period and overtime so the game headed into a shootout. The only goal scorer for either team was overage forward Pat Daley who over skated the puck, then reached back and slid a shot along the ice and through the five hole of a stunned Bulls goaltender for the 3-2 win.

A strong Windsor Spitfires club, playing in their first game of the weekend, marched through the maroon and white in their third game in three nights to the tune of 9-5.

The first period was all Spitfires as they scored four unanswered goals to take the lead to the dressing room after twenty minutes of play.

The second period saw goals come fast and furious as a combined nine tallies lit the lamp behind either goaltender. Scoring for the Petes was David Quesnele, Liam Heelis with two, and Mike Lomas, all of which came even strength.

However, the Windsor power play was too much for the maroon and white to handle as they walked away with a total of five goals in nine chances with the man advantage. Overage forward Pat Daley cut the lead to four in the third period just as a Spitfire penalty came to an end to make the final 9-5.

Rangers Outlast Petes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes saw their point streak stopped at six games tonight as they traveled to Kitchener to tangle with the host Rangers. Ranked in the top ten teams in all of the Canadian Hockey League, the Rangers had their way with the maroon and white, winning 8-4 at the Kitchener Auditorium.

The Petes took a lead to the dressing room after the first period as Jamie Doornbosch but a shot past Rangers' goaltender Ben Maxwell to give the Petes the 1-0 lead.

It was all Rangers from that point forward as they potted six goals on Jason Missiaen, and two on rookie Andrew D'Agostini who came on in relief of Missiaen early in the third period.

The Petes responded with goals by Ryan Spooner, David Quesnele, and Zack Kassian.

Petes Fall Victim to Late Game Heroics

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes looked as if they were in the driver's seat heading into the third period of tonight's game at the Memorial Centre. However a strong comeback, capped off by a shootout game winning goal by Jared Staal, saw the Petes fall by a 5-4 decision to the visiting Sudbury Wolves.

The Wolves came out of the gate flying as they got out to an early 2-0 lead before Petes' overage forward Pat Daley buried a beautiful pass from Ryan Spooner to cut the deficit to one.

The maroon and white continued to press throughout the second period as they scored another three unanswered goals by Adam Sedlak, Spooner, and Liam Heelis to get the Petes a 4-2 lead.

However, even though the Petes looked to be well on their way to another victory, the Wolves clawed back and tied the game with just over two minutes remaining in the game to force it to overtime.

The extra period solved nothing and the two teams would require a shootout. With his team in need of a goal, Daley snapped a shot over the Wolves goaltender and underneath the crossbar to even the shootout score. After two more players missed for either team, Jared Staal stepped over the blue line and fired a low wrist shot past goaltender Jason Missiaen for the win.

Petes Show Huge Heart

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Playing in their third game in three nights, finishing off their five game road trip, the Peterborough Petes showed a lot of heart and courage to topple the host Saginaw Spirit 6-5 tonight at the Dow Event Centre in Saginaw, Michigan.

After leaving every last bit of energy on the ice at the WFCU Centre in Windsor last night, the Petes jumped out to a 2-0 lead just over half way through the game as Mike Lomas and Ryan Spooner both capitalized on the power play for the maroon and white.

The third period saw goals come fast and furious as there were a combined nine goals, five by the Spirit and four by the mighty maroon and white. The Petes saw their lead diminish as they gave up two goals twenty-one seconds apart. However, goals by Pat Daley and Ryan Spooner replenished the two goal lead. After Saginaw had cut the lead to one, Daley scored his second of the night and Liam Heelis scored with a beautiful wrist shot beating the Spirit goaltender top shelf.

The final few minutes were very tense after the Petes had pushed their lead to 6-3, as the Spirit replied with two quick goals to cut the lead to 6-5 but could not beat rookie goaltender Andrew D'Agostini for a sixth time as he notched his first Ontario Hockey League win.

Also of note in this game was play-by-play announcer Pete Dalliday as he participated in his 1,000th consecutive game with the Peterborough Petes. Congratulations to Pete on a well-deserved milestone.

Petes Take Champs To Shootout

PETERBOROUGH, ON - In a game that was tagged as a blowout before the puck dropped, the Peterborough Petes put in a valiant effort to take the defending Ontario Hockey League champions to a shootout. Despite the solid effort by the maroon and white, the host Windsor Spitfires came out on top tonight at the WFCU Centre 3-2.

Both teams traded chances throughout the entire game with the Petes drawing first blood as Liam Heelis jumped on a rebound behind the Spitfires defense to give the maroon and white a 1-0 lead. The Spitfires would answer right back as Adam Henrique snapped a shot past Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen to even the score heading in to the second period.

The second period was much like the first as Matt Puempel stripped the puck away from a Spitfire defenceman and slid the puck underneath Troy Passingham's arm for a 2-1 advantage. Again the Spitfires answered back quickly as Dale Mitchell capped off a nice passing play to take a 2-2 draw in to the final frame.

Both goaltenders stood tall through the final frame and through overtime as the two teams had quality scoring chances but were unable to capitalize on any.

The Petes fell victim to a strong Windsor team in the shootout as Mitchell, Taylor Hall, and Ryan Ellis all beat Missiaen. Ryan Spooner scored for the Petes in the shootout but Matt Puempel was stopped to close the game out for the Spitfires.

Petes Start Road Trip With "W"

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes got their Western road trip off on the right foot at the RBC Centre in Sarnia tonight as they doubled up on the host Sting by a score of 6-3.

Both teams traded quality chances in the first frame as Sting power forward Kyle Neuber and Petes veteran forward Jack Walchessen both notched tallies to send the two teams to their respective dressing rooms tied 1-1.

The maroon and white took over from there as five unanswered goals powered them to a 6-1 lead before the Sting replied with two shorthanded goals to keep the game respectable. Scoring for the Petes in the final two frames was Mike Lomas, Matt Puempel, Liam Heelis, Pat Daley, and Jamie Doornbosch.

Goaltender Jason Missiaen picked up the win between the pipes for the Petes as he stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced.

Next action for the Petes is tomorrow night when they travel to Windsor to take on the defending Ontario Hockey League Champion Spitfires.

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Ricky’s All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes, have announced Petes’ captain Zack Kassian as the Ricky’s All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending November 23rd , 2009. For his accomplishments, Zack receives a gift certificate from Ricky’s All Day Grill.

Kassian, a native of LaSalle, ON, led the Petes to a 2-1 record this past weekend in the Ontario Hockey League. His shorthanded goal against the Niagara Ice Dogs swung the momentum towards the maroon and white and sparked a come from behind victory Saturday night. Kassian continues to show that the Peterborough Petes organization made the right decision in naming him team captain as he potted one goal to go along with his four assists for five points and a +1 rating through three games. His strong play saw him awarded with a spot on the Ontario team against the team Russia in the Subway Super Series.

Stong Third Period Rallies Petes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes are back even in the Ontario Hockey League. A come from behind win in the third period rallied the maroon and white back from a 2-1 deficit and powered them past the Niagara Ice Dogs for a 3-2 win tonight at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.

The two teams traded goals in the first frame as Niagara's Matt Petgrave and the Petes' Joey West each potted one for a 1-1 tie after one period of play.

The second period was even, however the Ice Dogs scored one to take a 2-1 lead in to the third period.

After a four minute checking from behind penatly was assessed to Justin Larson, the Petes' penalty killers took to work. Killing off all four minutes was a huge momentum swing as well as a short handed goal by captain Zack Kassian to bring the teams even. Shortly after, defenceman Jamie Doornbosch banged home a loose puck beside the Niagara net for a 3-2 lead and Jason Missiaen closed the door the rest of the way for to seal the victory.

Next action for the Petes is Thursday night when they travel to Sarnia to kick off their Western road trip against the Sarnia Sting.

Daley Powers Petes Past Generals

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Pat Daley put on a show for all his fans at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa last night. Usually a quiet building when the hometown team is on the losing end, Daley had a large fan club that willed him to a hat trick in a 4-3 Peterborough Petes win over the rival Oshawa Generals.

The maroon and white got the game started quickly as Buckhorn native, Justin Larson scored just 1:36 in to the first frame. The Generals responded just three minutes later and Daley's first of three on the night was enough to give the Petes a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes.

The second period saw great scoring chances for both clubs as both goaltenders stood their ground between the pipes. However, Oshawa scored to even the game after two periods.

Daley scored his second of the night to break the 2-2 tie midway through the third period and the Generals responded with just 1:34 remaining in the game to send the game to an extra frame.

The Petes began the overtime on the power play as a penalty carried over from the end of the third period. Just as the penalty came to an end, Daley capitalized on a scramble in front of the net to slide the puck past Generals goaltender Michael Zador for the overtime victory.

Next action for the Petes is tonight when they visit the Niagara Ice Dogs at 7:00.

Petes Fall To Colts

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Barrie Colts have had their way with the Peterborough Petes in the past week. Coming off a 6-1 victory over the maroon and white on Saturday night in Barrie, the Petes were unable to hold an early lead and fell to the strong Colts squad 6-2 Wednesday night at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The Petes started the game on a positive note when rookie forward Luke Hietkamp banged in a puck that was laying in the crease off an Adam Sedlak wrist shot. Barrie responded with four unanswered goals including two to start the second period.

Liam Heelis responded for the hometown club as he dragged the puck around a sprawling Colts defenceman and tucked the puck past goaltender Peter Di Salvo.

Barrie replied to Heelis' goal with two more to close out the game, making the final 6-2.

Next action for the Petes is Friday night when they travel to Oshawa to restore the "115 Series" at the General Motors Centre.

Petes Look To Avenge Loss

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes will look to avenge their loss on Saturday night as they host the Barrie Colts in the second game of the home-and-home series. The Petes traveled to Barrie on Saturday night and were on the losing end of a 6-1 score.

The Colts, the favourite to win the Eastern Conference, currently sit two points back of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors for the top seed. Meanwhile, the Petes sit just two points behind the Kingston Frontenacs with twenty-two points as they battle for first place in the East Division.

Walchessen, a native of Ortly Beach, NJ, a usual defensive rock, led the maroon and white offensively this past weekend, scoring one goal and adding two assists for three points in just two games. With his strong start, both offensively and defensively, Jack is on pace to top his stats in each of his previous three seasons with the Petes. His play thus far has come alongside Joey West and David Quesnele on the “energy line”. Walchessen’s success comes on the heals of being named an Assistant Captain with the Peterborough Petes for the 2009-10 Ontario Hockey League season. Lions Crowned COSSA Champs

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Adam Scott Lions are on a streak. With a decisive 63-21 win over the Trenton Tigers at Trent University, the school has now won three straight COSSA titles.

Doing the damage for the Lions was fifth year player Cody McLeod who scored six of Adam Scott's nine touchdowns.

The Lions now move on to the National Capital Bowl Semifinal on Friday at Trent. Congratulations and good luck as the Lions look to continue their success.

Petes Buzz Past Sting

PETERBOROUGH, ON - After a tough week of practice, the Peterborough Petes came out of the gate flying to take a commanding 7-3 decision over the visiting Sarnia Sting at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The first period was all Petes as Sting goaltender Adam Courchaine held his team in the game, at one point facing fourteen shots straight. However, it was rookie Matt Puempel who got the maroon and white on the board off what appeared to be a bounce off the netting at the end of the rink that went undetected. The Sting replied quickly before Pat Daley set up sophomore forward Ryan Spooner for his tenth of the season to give the Petes the lead heading into the dressing room.

The second frame remained all Petes as they took a commanding 4-1 lead on goals by Joey "WestJet" West, Jamie Doornbosch before the Sting replied. "Jumping Jack Flash", Jack Walchessen, restored the Petes three goal lead as he snapped a shot past Courchaine top shelf to make the score 5-2 at the end of the second period.

The maroon and white closed out the game on a strong note as Joey West scored his second of the game on a weird bounce in front of the Sarnia goal and Puempel notched his second of the game into the empty net to make the final 7-3.

Next action for the Petes comes Saturday night when they travel to Barrie to take on the Colts.

Local Schools Win Titles

PETERBOROUGH, ON - High school football is alive and well in the city of Peterborough. Two schools captured COSSA Championships today and one will compete tomorrow as Holy Cross Hurricanes' junior team won the "AA" crown and the Crestwood Mustangs' senior team won the "AAA" title. Tomorrow, the Adam Scott Lions' senior team will battle for the "AA" championship at Trent University.

In what turned out to be a game that many of nails were bitten, the Hurricanes powered past Quinte at the Holy Cross Athletic Field this afternoon by a score of 42-23. Doing the damage for the Hurricanes was Brendan Le with two, Evan Rutherford with three, and Shane Alexander with one, all of which came via the running attack.

Answering for Quinte was Michael Ray and Carson Andrews with two.

The Mustangs marched in to Belleville and were on the winning side of a 10-0 score.

Congratulations to both teams and good luck to Adam Scott tomorrow at Trent.

Petes Fall To Strong Rangers Squad

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Playing in front of the hometown crowd against the Kitchener Rangers, the number two team in the country, the Petes put in their best effort of the season, falling 6-4 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The Petes came out of the gate flying and caught the Rangers by surprise, scoring just thirty-six seconds into the game on a beautiful setup by the "Buckhorn Bandit" Justin Larson to captain Zack Kassian for a quick 1-0 lead. However, two lucky bounces later, the Rangers had answered back and took a 2-1 lead. Before the end of the period, overage forward Pat Daley capped off a perfect power play setup to draw the teams even heading into the second period of play.

The second period saw both teams trade quality chances with no outcome for the first fourteen minutes. However, two goals by the Rangers and a quick answer tally by rookie Matt Puempel on a mad scramble brought the Petes back within one goal after two periods.

Play picked up in the third period with exciting end-to-end action. The "Buckhorn Bandit" potted his fourth of the season after the Rangers had extended their lead to 5-3 early in the period.

With Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen on the bench for the extra attacker, the Rangers blocked a point shot and slid the puck home to seal the victory 6-4 despite a solid sixty minutes of great effort shown by the maroon and white.

Next action for the Petes comes Saturday night when they travel to Sudbury to take on the host Sudbury Wolves at the Sudbury Arena.

Coming off back-to-back shootout wins over the Ottawa 67's and Belleville Bulls, the maroon and white will look to continue their strong start to the week tonight. However, it comes against a tough opponent.

Kitchener enters tonight's game with the Petes having just one loss in regulation in the young Ontario Hockey League season.

The hometown boys will receive a boost tonight as captain Zack Kassian returns from his one game suspension for his slew foot penalty Monday morning in Ottawa.

Petes Win in Shootout

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes saw their winning streak extend to two games this evening as they beat the host Belleville Bulls in a shootout, the second straight shootout win for the maroon and white.

The two teams battled hard in the first period with Belleville striking twice, once on the power play and once at even strength. However, before the period could come to a close, Sault Ste. Marie native David Quesnele slid a pass from Zach Tatrn into the empty cage to pull the maroon and white within one goal after twenty minutes.

Newcomer Mike Lomas, acquired in a trade last Thursday from the Erie Otters, scored his first goal with the club to pull the Petes even.

The Bulls pulled ahead midway through the third period and looked to have the game won with just 30 seconds left. However, overage forward Pat Daley centered a pass in front of the Belleville net that managed to bounce past the Bulls goaltender that sent the game into overtime.

The overtime solved nothing and the game was decided in the shootout. Petes' netminder Jason Missiaen stopped both shots he faced and forwards Ryan Spooner and Matt Puempel both scored to lift the Petes past the Bulls 4-3.

Doornbosch, a native of Richmond Hill, ON, continued his strong play this weekend as he battles for the top scoring defenceman in the Ontario Hockey League. Jamie is coming off a strong campaign with the maroon and white last season where he scored a career high thirty-seven points in sixty-four games. Petes Grab First Place

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes are in first place in the East Division thanks to a 5-4 shootout win in the Nation's Capital this morning. In what was the earliest game in the Petes' history, the maroon and white came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the host Ottawa 67's in a "School Day Game".

Trailing by one goal in the first period, Petes' captain Zack Kassian banged home a beautiful pass from the "Buckhorn Bandit", Justin Larson, to tie the game at one apiece. Both teams would exchange chances late in the period however, strong play by goaltenders Jason Missiaen and Chris Perugini held both teams off to the score sheet.

The second period saw both teams score twice for a 3-3 tie heading into the third period. Petes' rookie Matt Puempel and sophomore defenceman Adam Sedlak scored on a four minute power play to bring the teams back even after falling behind 3-1.

Both teams exchanged goals in the third period and both goaltenders stood tall in between the pipes as Jamie Doornbosch put the Petes ahead before 67's forward Ryan Martindale tapped in a rebound with just five seconds to go in the game to send the game into overtime.

Overtime solved nothing and the teams headed to a shootout. Jason Missiaen stopped all three 67's shooters he faced and Petes' sophomore forward Ryan Spooner scored on a beautiful deke to seal the victory for the maroon and white.

Next action for the Petes comes Wednesday night when they travel to Belleville to take on the Bulls at the Yardmen Arena.

Petes Strong Effort Comes Up Short

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Despite a valiant effort by the Peterborough Petes at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, the Majors were able to fend off a late game push to beat the Petes 4-3 Friday night. With the win, the Majors extend their winning streak to six games and with the loss, the Petes see their record fall to 8-9-0.

Strong play by rookie goaltender Andrew D'Agostini and continued success by the line combination of Pat Daley, Ryan Spooner, and Matt Puempel kept the Petes within striking distance for most of the game against a strong Majors' squad who crept into the CHL Mastercard Top 10 rankings this past week.

The Petes now head off to the National Capital Region for a meeting with the Ottawa 67's at the Urbandale Centre on Monday morning at 10:30 AM. The game will be the end of a long weekend for the Petes as they leave tomorrow morning. First stop will be at the Scotiabank Centre to catch a meeting between the Ottawa Senators and Zach Bogosian's Atlanta Thrashers. The maroon and white will continue their journey to Parliament Hill with a guided tour by local MP Dean Del Mastro.

Petes Make It Three In A Row

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes continued their early season domination over their arch-rival Oshawa Generals with a 6-4 home ice victory. It was the Petes' third straight win over Oshawa in the young Ontario Hockey League season. Of the Generals six loses, three have come at the hands of the mighty maroon and white in the "115 Series".

Petes' sophomore forward Ryan Spooner led the attack with four points, including one goal and three assists. Equally important was his plus four rating on the evening. Jamie Doornbosch and Matt Puempel each added two goals and newcomer Jamie Wise potted an empty net goal for his first Ontario Hockey League tally.

Petes' overage defenceman Christopher Breen, playing in front of the home crowd for the first time, put in a solid effort. Of particular note was his sliding out into the slot to block a late game scoring chance for the Generals with the Petes hanging on to a 5-4 lead.

Once again goaltender Jason Missiaen was outstanding in out dueling Oshawa counterpart Kevin Bailie.

All in all, all of the Petes played well and contributed to this important victory which moves Peterborough into a first place tie in the Eastern Division with the Generals and Kingston Frontenacs.

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes will look to get their long weekend off to a good start tonight as they host the rival Oshawa Generals at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The Petes enter tonight's action with a 7-8-0 record, good enough for 3rd place in the East Division while the Generals hold 1st spot in the East Division with a 7-5-2 record.

This is the second time the two teams have met this season as the Petes hold a 2-0 advantage in the "115 Series" with wins of 6-4 and 5-4 earlier in the year.

Lions Thump Hurricanes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Adam Scott Lions continued their strong play at Trent University today, walking over the Holy Cross Hurricanes 50-0 in the first round of high school football playoffs.

The Hurricanes accepted defeat with true class, lining up on the 50 yard line and giving the strong Lions squad a standing ovation and wishing each play good luck in the next round.

Trailing by a large margin in the fourth quarter, coach Randy Riel made sure to give the graduating players more playing time as it was their last game wearing silver and green.

Hurricanes Prepare for Lions

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Holy Cross Hurricanes Senior Football team may have met their match. Although the game will not be played until 1:00 PM on Thursday at Trent University, the mood around the halls is very dull as they get set to face the league's number one team in the Adam Scott Lions.

The Hurricanes enter round one of the playoffs with a 2-3 record, winning both games on the road, and losing all three games played on home field. Of course, the outcome of the first meeting between the clubs does not brighten the spirit's of the Hurricanes squad.

Adam Scott marched into Holy Cross undefeated after one week, and routed the Hurricanes squad 65-7. Led by a strong effort by Cody McLeod, the Hurricanes were left without answers, and the season took a downward spiral from that point forward.

Puempel, a native of Essex, ON, made a very successful return from a concussion, scoring two goals to go with his one assist in two games this past weekend. Matt's two goals on Thursday night against the visiting Saginaw Spirit was enough to earn him first star honours of the game. A rookie in the Ontario Hockey League, he has been moved up to the Petes' second line, alongside sophomore forward Ryan Spooner and overage forward Pat Daley, as a reward for his strong play thus far.

Petes Fall to Battalion

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes saw their record fall to 7-8 last night when they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Brampton Battalion at the Powerade Centre.

The Petes opened the scoring when sophomore forward Ryan Spooner continued his early success putting the Petes up 1-0. However, three unanswered goals by the Battalion and a strong defensive effort in the third period was enough to fend off the Petes.

Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen continued his strong play stopping 39 of the 42 shots he faced.

Petes End Skid With Solid Effort

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes put an end to their early losing slide last night with a 5-3 victory over the visiting Saginaw Spirit at the Memorial Centre. The victory brings the Petes back to .500 on the year.

The Petes came out of the gate flying in the first period as Sault Ste. Marie native David Quesnele got the maroon and white on the board on a backhand past goaltender Edward Pasquale. The momentum was dampened for a short time when Spirit forward Ivan Telegin beat Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen. However, goals by rookie Matt Puempel and Quesnele gave the Petes a 3-1 lead heading to the second period.

It took the Petes just 45 seconds in to the frame to extend their lead to three. However, it was short lived as the Spirit managed to cut the lead to 4-3 on goals by Jordan Szwarz and Tyler Murovich just 59 seconds apart. After a timeout by Petes' head coach Ken McRae to calm the team down, the Petes scored 46 seconds later on a beautiful pass through the slot to Adrian Robertson who tucked a wrist shot past Pasquale.

The third period saw Missiaen put on a goaltending clinic, stopping 26 shots to keep the score 5-3.

Next action for the Petes comes tonight when they visit the Brampton Battalion at the Powerade Centre.

Petes Send Holden to Otters

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes and Erie Otters have completed a trade in the Ontario Hockey League today.

The Petes send sophomore defenceman and Peterborough native Derek Holden to the Otters for overage defenceman Chris Breen and a conditional 6th round draft pick.

Breen, a native of Uxbridge, ON, brings veteran leadership along with experience to a young Petes defence.

Petes Look To End Skid Early

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes will look to put an end to their four game losing skid tonight as they host the Saginaw Spirit at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. This meeting marks the first of two on the year between the clubs.

With three losses last weekend, two of which on home ice, the Petes have been working hard at practice this week to try and put those three games behind them. The team currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference, two points back of the Kingston Frontenacs with two games in hand.

Spooner Named Player of the Week

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Ricky’s All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes, have announced Petes’ sophomore forward Ryan Spooner as the Ricky’s All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending October 19th, 2009. For his accomplishments, Ryan receives a gift certificate from Ricky’s All Day Grill.

Spooner, a native of Kanata, ON, scored three goals and two assists to lead the team in scoring throughout the weekend. His five point effort was enough to bump him up to a tie for first place on the team with a total of eight assists to go along with his seven goals for a total of fifteen points. Ryan currently is tied with Petes’ veteran defenceman, Jamie Doornbosch. Spooner’s success comes with perfect timing with this being the year he becomes eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in June. Currently rated as a late first round pick by Central Scouting, Ryan will look to improve on his ranking by continuing his early success with the Petes.

Theberge Player of the Week

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Ricky's All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes, have announced Petes' overage Brett Theberge as the Ricky's All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending October 12th, 2009. For his accomplishments Brett receives a gift certificate from Ricky's All Day Grill.

Brett, a native of Sundridge, ON, led the Petes from start to finish in their 7-1 rout of the visiting Erie Otters on Thursday night at the Memorial Centre. His two goals and one assist was enough to leave Brett tied for team lead on the weekend with sophomore forward Ryan Spooner. Through ten games in the 2009-10 Ontario Hockey League season, Theberge holds third spot on the Petes leader board for total points with seven goals and three assists for ten total points. Brett has come out of the gate flying in his overage season, currently scoring at a point per game rate, and really showing his leadership skills both on and off the ice.

Petes Hang Tough But Fall Short to Majors

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes saw their record fall to 6-4 tonight at the hands of the Mississauga St. Michael's Major in front of 1,412 fans at the Hershey Centre. The Petes finish the first ten game stretch of the season a very respectable 6-4 despite what critics may have predicted.

The first period saw both teams exchange chances and both goalies stand tall to keep the teams scoreless through twenty minutes. Petes' goaltender Jason Missiaen and Majors' goaltender Chris Carozzi stopped nine and five shots respectively.

The second frame was much of the same. However, the Majors capitalized on one chance, 5:22 into the period on a shorthanded goal by Jordan Mayer, firing a wrist shot high over top of Missiaen's blocker.

The third period had the Petes come close to tieing the game several times although Chris Carozzi stood his ground and walked away with the shutout. The Majors scored once in the third on a power play goal by Rob Flick.

The Petes' Jason Missiaen captured third star honours along with Diller's Digger of the Game.

The Petes next action comes next Thursday when they host the Guelph Storm, 7:00 PM at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. This game may mark the return of Peterborough native David Searle to the Storm lineup as he is recovering from a shoulder injury.

Peterborough Connection to the NHL

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The city of Peterborough was well represented in the National Hockey League on Thursday night.

In Ottawa, ex-Pete Matt Carkner scored his first career NHL goal and Peterborough native Mike Fisher scored the game winning goal to help the Senators past the visiting New York Islanders 3-2.

Former Pete Jordan Staal scored his first goal of the season on his way to helping the Penguins edge the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4, and ex-Pete Jason Williams added an assist in Detroit's 3-2 decision over the Chicago Blackhawks.

In tonight's NHL action, Eric Staal and Cory Stillman go head-to-head as the Florida Panthers visit the Carolina Hurricanes.

Petes Romp Over Erie

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes took it to the Erie Otters tonight at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, beating them early and often on their way to a 7-1 decision. The win, along with the Barrie Colts win, keeps the Petes tied for first place overall in the Eastern Conference with the Colts.

The first period was all Petes as they scored 1:15 into the game on a rebound off the end boards that bounced right in front of the net to overage forward and Petes Player of the Week Pat Daley. Daley made no mistake in finding the back of the net to beat Otter goaltender Ramis Sadikov for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore forward Ryan Spooner gave the Petes a 2-0 lead on the power play beating Sadikov over the shoulder with a backhand. Brett Theberge closed out the period on a nice pass from Jamie Doornbosch that left Theberge wide open at the side of the net to give the Petes a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period of play.

The second period was much of the same as the maroon and white added three more to give them a 6-0 lead through forty minutes of play. Goals in the second period came from Spooner, Theberge, whose wrist shot five hole chased Otters' goaltender Sadikov, and the "Buckhorn Bandit" Justin Larson.

Both teams exchanged goals in the third period, the Otters getting on the board on a wrist shot by Mike Cazzola and the Petes by Liam Heelis to make the final 7-1.

The three stars for tonight's game were Brett Theberge, Ryan Spooner, and Jason Missiaen. The Hardest Working Player of the Game was the Petes' Liam Heelis.

Next action for the Petes comes tomorrow night when they visit the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors at the Hershey Centre, game time 7:30 PM.

Petes in Complete Control After 2 Periods

The Peterborough Petes are well on their way to improving to 6-3 on the young Ontario Hockey League Season as they lead the Erie Otters 6-0 after two periods of play at the Memorial Centre. Goals in the second period came from Ryan Spooner, Brett Theberge, and Justin Larson.

Petes' goalie Jason Missiaen has had to be on his toes for a good part of the game despite his team being in front by a large margin. He has stopped all 28 shots he has faced through two periods.

Petes vs. Otters Preview

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes will look to improve on their 5-3 record tonight when they host the Erie Otters, 7:00 PM at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. This is the first of two meetings between the clubs this season and the first of two games on the weekend for the Petes.

Last weekend, the Petes battled with the Oshawa Generals, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, and Sudbury Wolves and managed to take four of a possible six points including two on their Northern road trip to jump past the Kingston Frontenacs in the overall standings and into a tie with the Barrie Colts a top the Eastern Conference.

The Otters will bring their 2-2-1-1 record with them in hopes of moving above the .500 mark on the season. In a tough Western Conference the Otters currently hold down eighth spot.

The Petes will travel to Mississauga tomorrow night to take on the Majors in the first game of a four game set this season. The Majors currently sit in a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with the Kingston Frontenacs.

Daley Named Player of the Week

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Ricky's All Day Grill, in partnership with the Peterborough Petes have announced overage forward Pat Daley as the Ricky's All Day Grill Petes Player of the Week for the week ending October 4th, 2009. For his accomplishments, Pat receives a gift certificate from Ricky's All Day Grill.

Daley, a native of Whitby, ON, helped lead the Petes to a 2-1 record this past weekend with two goals and four assists for a total of six points through three games. With captain Zack Kassian out due to injury Daley took the leadership reins and proved his value as one of the Petes' two overage players with a three point effort in Sudbury on Saturday night. Pat now sits second on the team in total points with eight points through six games, and in a tie for second in goals with Zack Kassian at three, two back of Brett Theberge who has five. The efforts of Daley and his teammates see the Petes holding down first place in the East Division, and in a tie with the Barrie Colts for first place in the Eastern Conference with the Colts holding a game in hand.

Huge Character Win for Petes

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes showed what they are made of tonight as they beat the Sudbury Wolves 5-3 at the Sudbury Community Arena in Sudbury.

Playing their third game in three nights, without captain Zack Kassian in the lineup and losing Matt Puempel to an undisclosed injury, the maroon and white persevered with a strong team effort against a tough Sudbury squad.

The first period was dominated in large part by the Petes as sophmore defenceman Adam Sedlak blasted a shot from the point that beat Wolves goaltender Alain Valiquette. With the score tied 1-1, Buckhorn native Justin Larson tapped home a rebound to give the Petes a 2-1 lead heading in to the dressing room.

The second frame looked identical to the first as the Petes outshot the Wolves 33-23 through two periods with Joey West and Pat Daley scoring to give the maroon and white a 4-2 advantage heading towards the final period of play.

Both teams exchanged chances in the third period as both goalies shut the door for fourteen minutes of play until Jared Staal scored on the powerplay for the Wolves to bring them within one. However, his efforts were erased as overage forward Brett Theberge scored in to the empty net to make the final 5-3 for the Petes.

Petes Fall to Hounds for Second Straight Time

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes fell to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for the second time in eight days tonight as they lost 4-1 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Rookie goaltender Andrew D'Agostini received his first career Ontario Hockey League start for the maroon and white but couldn't find his first win as the strong Greyhound squad riffled 4 by the young netminder. However there was no sign of nerves for the Scarborough native as he stopped 31 of the 35 shots he faced throughout the night earning him the game's 3rd star and "Diller's Digger of the Game".

The Petes' lone goal came on a power play midway through the first period as Pat Daley beat Sault goaltender Bryce O'Hagan to tie the game at 1-1.

Scoring for Sault Ste. Marie were Brock Beukeboom, Vern Cooper, Brett Thompson and Jacob Muzzin.

Petes' captain Zack Kassian left the game midway through the second period with an undisclosed injury/sickness.

Next action for the Petes comes tomorrow night when they visit the Sudbury Wolves, game time 7:05.

Lions Down Hurricanes in High School Football

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Adam Scott Lions senior football club improved their record to 2-0 yesterday as they downed the rival Holy Cross Hurricanes 65-7 at Holy Cross yesterday afternoon.

Cody McLeod, a veteran with the team, had a break out day which saw him score six touchdowns, four of which came in the second quarter of play to give his team a 49-0 lead at half. Kevin Blunck and Shayne Hogan capped off the running game for the Lions as they scored one touchdown each. Lions' quarterback Rob Tergisni had a strong game highlighted by one touchdown and a two point conversion late in the game.

The Hurricanes got on the board with a minute left when fourth year quarterback Riley Quinlan found Jon Rideout in the end zone for the score.

Next action for both teams comes next Thursday when Adam Scott hosts Norwood and Holy Cross visits Campbellford.

Petes Start off Weekend on Right Foot

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes got their weekend started on a positive note as they won round two of the "115 Series", beating the Oshawa Generals 5-4 in front of 2,748 fans at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

As was the case last week in the Motor City, Oshawa jumped out to an early 2-0 lead only to have the Petes storm back for the victory. Badly out shot once again, Peterborough somehow found a way to ride the strong play of goaltender Jason Missiaen. Several players stepped up their game. Among them were overage center Brett Theberge who chipped in with a goal and an assist as well as winning many key faceoffs en route to being named the game's first star. Other strong performances turned in by Ryan Spooner who notched a timely shorthanded marker, Zack Kassian with strong play along the boards, and David Quesnele who potted the game winning goal.

The CHL's greatest rivalry played out as it has many times in the past. Following Kassian's early second period goal which tied the game at 2, a couple of scraps ensued, neither of which resulted in clear cut winners. Late in the game with just under five minutes remaining, the Gennies thought that they had evened the score at 5-5. However after a lengthy delay which saw both referees and both linesmen in communication with the video goal judge followed by an exchange between the referee and the goal judge in the arena the goal was waved off and the Petes maintained their 5-4 lead the rest of the way.

The Petes hopped on the bus immediately following the game and headed for Parry Sound for the night before heading off to Sault Ste. Marie for tomorrow night's game, 7:30 PM against the Greyhounds on the all new 100.5 Kruz FM.
